You are my best hope
A year has passed since the first giddy post when I introduced you to my newest book. I am now another year wiser. Here’s what I’ve learned.
This week my book, Dreaming on the Page: Tap into Your Midnight Mind to Supercharge Your Writing turned 1 year old. 🎉
Here I am at this time last year, crowing (and glowing) on publication day:
A year has passed since that first giddy post. I am now another year wiser! Here’s what I’ve learned.
While everybody dreams, and everybody has a story to tell—not everybody realizes they need to read a book about dreams and writing 🤣.
A book isn’t just a pile of print and pages. It’s a conversation, a community, and a relationship.
And helping that book find its way into the world is not only about publicity agents and marketing teams. Most importantly it’s about people like you, who talk to your friends and tell them about what you’re reading and why you love it.
An article in last Sunday's New York Times called this organic build. Talking about the year’s sleeper literary hit, Bright, Beautiful Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, Kristen McLean from Circa Bookscan explained:
“We’re back to good old-fashioned word-of-mouth recommendations, from a bookseller, from a friend.” NYT Sun., Dec. 31, 2023
Despite all of the advances in publishing and marketing, it is still the power of reader-to-reader recommendations that can rocket a book’s reach.
I wrote Dreaming on the Page because writing and dreamwork are my passions, and studying and practicing the interconnections between the two get my neurons sparking in the most satisfying ways.
Sharing the practices I’ve developed over the decades in writing circles, in my newsletters, and in the pages of the book has been a source of pride and joy for me!
If I’m a bit evangelical about my love for dreams and writing, this is why:
I believe that tapping into our dreams and imaginations can help us evolve into the best versions of ourselves.
Dreamwork and writing help us grow our capacity for empathy, hone our wisdom, and discover new pathways to personal peace and collective healing.
Plus dreams and writing are entertaining, fun, and dazzling in their intelligence, wit, and creativity.
Pursuing these interests has put me in touch with some of the most interesting, genuine, generous, brave, and creative people I could hope to know.
And you, dear reader, are a member of that ever-widening circle of inspiration!
You are also my very best hope for getting Dreaming on the Page into more readers’, writers’, and dreamers’ hands!
It’s no longer true that a book’s success is sealed in its first weeks or months in print. The same article I quoted above reports that there’s an “ongoing shift in the book business, with sales of older titles overtaking new releases.”
I have no illusion of one day finding Dreaming on the Page on the New York Times Bestseller list. But I do dream of this book finding its way to the readers who will treasure it, and share it, one conversation and one recommendation at a time.
Dreaming on the Page is now one glorious year older and wiser. 🥳 Help me celebrate by spreading the news to your friends and family who love to read, write, and celebrate creativity!
